Currency
The Central Bank of Samoa is the sole supplier of Samoan bank notes and coins. We act as a wholesale distributor to the trading banks, and manage the design and manufacturing of the currency. We also withdraw damaged or unusable notes and coins to manage the quality of currency in circulation.
Samoan Currency in Use
One of the Central Bank's key obligations is to meet the currency needs of the public. Therefore, as the sole provider of the currency, it has to ensure that stocks of all currency denominations (notes and coins) are in adequate supply and of high quality to meet the transactional needs of the public. No other person is allowed to print or issue currency. And, it is an offence to deface any currency by means of writing, stamping, erasure or any other actions that would change the features of the currency.
Counterfeit Prevention
The Central Bank of Samoa takes counterfeiting of Samoan currency which includes bank notes and coins very seriously and responds by researching and developing new security features that are difficult to copy, easy to use, work with local law enforcement to monitor and respond to counterfeiting activity and show Samoans, especially those who handle cash regularly, how to verify bank notes to ensure they are genuine.
Collector's Currency
The Collectors' Currency Section of the Central Bank of Samoa issues legal tender currency products for collectors. Most of these collector's products have low mintage or production limits, and have a Samoan theme to their design. We also sell bulk volumes of general circulation notes and coins to our collectors. Please contact us for prices on any of our products.
Currency Validity
The following banknotes and coins below were put into circulation between 1962 and 2006. Some of the following currencies below are no longer issued but they are still legal tender. For more information about Samoa notes in circulation. click here.
